After years of investment and hiring, US-based tech companies have laid off 250,000 plus workers since the end of 2022 when Covid-era incentives started running out. The pace of these layoffs has recently picked up steam with over 125,000 tech workers losing their jobs so far in 2024.
These layoffs are part of a broad strategy to reduce costs by hiring less expensive labor outside the United States combined with investments in AI at the expense of human workers. The layoffs include some of the biggest and most profitable companies in tech:
